When it came time to pick our member of the Month for February 2016, Dawn was the first person that came to mind for everyone on the Reign team.
What can we say?
She’s been on fire!
Not only has she been seeing some amazing results,
Jan 2015 she weighed in at 160lbs.
In December 2015 she weighed 134lbs.
Dawn lost 26lbs & and total of 15 inches!!!
(Dawn is also in a challenge now so who knows where she will be at the end of this month.)
Dawn has continually been such an amazing member in our community!
She always brings a great attitude to the gym, works hard, is always helping support other members, and is just an awesome person to be around.
Her energy is absolutely contagious!
Okay, now it’s time to get to the Q & A section with Dawn and get to know her a little bit better.
1. What inspired you to come to Reign?
I made a 2015 new year’s resolution to “get skinny.” In January and February of 2015, I did home video work outs of Jillian Michaels but was getting bored of doing them by myself. At the end of February,I found out about the March $79 trial month at Reign. I thought I’d check it out. In the past, I’ve always had gym memberships but never used it because I didn’t know what else to do besides walk on the treadmill and use the elliptical. I didn’t know what to expect when I signed up for this trial month. I was scared and nervous, especially after seeing beastly pictures of members doing beastly things (Lauren carrying PJ). But in the end, I’m so glad I tried it out and I never looked back! I love this gym and the reign fit fam! Also, my new year’s resolution of “get skinny” changed to being healthy and fit.
2. Tell us a little about yourself. What’s a Day in the Life of Dawn?
As an educator, day to day work changes a little bit but there’s one thing that stays consistent throughout my daily life and that’s training at Reign! On Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, I wake up at 5am, leave my house by 5:30 and drive to reign. Mon, Wed, and Fri are for 6am ReignFit Classes and Thursdays, I do semi-private training with coach Martha. Tuesdays are usually my sleeping in/rest day, unless I’m doing a Reign challenge, then I wake up at 5 to do the physical challenges. After I train, I come back home, get ready, pack up my meal prepped lunch and snacks, fill up my gallon water bottle, eat breakfast and then drive to work at Cleveland High School. My job as a College Prep Adviser is to work with with juniors and seniors and support them with the college application process and the financial aid process. There are slow days where I don’t see students so I’m doing administrative work, such as writing reports, replying to a bunch of emails, and planning events. The busy but fun days (usually close to a college/scholarship application deadline) are when students come into my office asking for help in reading their essays, writing letter of recommendations for them, or just anything that relates to college. Like I said, it’s different everyday but I love doing what I do! After work, I’m either going home to relax or going home to get ready for a double at Reign. My favorite time of the day is making and eating dinner! Then sleep and repeat the next day!
3. What has been your biggest accomplishments here at Reign?
I think my biggest accomplishment is just not giving up and to keep working on being a better version of myself. I’m always surprising myself by doing things I thought I couldn’t do at Reign, like doing push-ups on my toes. I was never an athlete and in high school, I waived all my P.E credits by doing an online health class (yes, you can do that.) So, when I started progressing on a lot of the workouts, I’d be really proud of myself and will usually text Travis after a workout, telling him that I PR’d a time or I put another 10 lbs on my barbell squats. It’s a great feeling knowing that if you just put in effort, you can accomplish anything!
4. Favorite Cheat Meal?
PIZZA & ANYTHING CHOCOLATE!
5. Who is your HERO and why?
My parents! They sacrificed their awesome jobs (mom was an engineer and dad was a sanitarian) and life in the Philippines to bring their 3 girls to the US to have a better education. Growing up, my parents worked graveyard shifts just so they can support us. I am forever grateful for what they’ve done for us.
6. If you could go on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ what would you showcase?
Well, one of my greatest talent is eating so I would showcase eating a whole pizza and drink a whole bottle of wine! 🙂
7. What’s your favorite exercise and why? What’s your least favorite and why?
Favorite exercise is squats! It’s good for the legs and glutes. Least favorite is DB thrusters or anything that works upper body since that’s my weakness!
8. What advice would you give to anyone looking to start their fitness journey?
It all starts with changing your mindset.Ask yourself “how bad do you really want this?” Don’t give up!! There’s been plenty of times I wanted to give up because I didn’t see any progress. I learned that slow progress is progress and that you just have to trust the process. Also, most importantly, surround yourself with a supportive community! The Reign fit fam has played a huge role in my transformation! Without their encouraging and inspiring words and them cheering me on in class, I would not be where I’m at right now.
9. Favorite television show?
Jane the Virgin and Grey’s Anatomy. For reality tv show, Total Divas on E! It’s one of my motivations, seeing WWE Divas train for the ring. They are badass!
10. Favorite song to workout to?
Whatever song is playing at Reign. When I do home physical challenges, I’m always listening to Beyonce on Pandora.
11. What are your hobbies outside of Reign?
HIKING with the bf! Before dating him, I was never active. I was the lazy girl, too hungover to do anything from the night before. He got me into hiking and I LOVE IT! We’ve hiked over 10 different mountains together and hiked up poo poo point too many times to count! Is drinking red wine a hobby? If it is, then that’s one of them! 🙂 I also like to read and chase sunsets and sunrises!
12. What are your future health and fitness goals?
I want to keep working on my upper body strength. It’s my weakness!! I’d love to be able to do one pull-up without any assist. Another goal is to run a half marathon. I’m already signed up for it. It’s a matter of training for it and completing it in June.
13. How has Reign affected & helped your life outside the gym?
Reign has definitely changed my life, positively!! It’s made me be more active and try other new active things, like yoga! I signed up for a yoga class in March and I’m excited for that. I’ve also signed up for more races since being at Reign. This spring, I am going to be a coach for Girls on the Run, a program empowering young girls to take control of their lives by helping them build confidence while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. I’m excited for that! It’s also made me look at food differently. A misconception that others see with people trying to lose weight is that they are starving themselves by depriving themselves of food. Oh no! I still eat a lot!! It’s all about balance, counting macros, and eating good quality food! I’m also always happy and have more energy! I started my fitness journey to make myself feel better and to shed some pounds not realizing that I would inspire others. I’ve had former students messaging me telling me that I’ve inspired them to stay healthy and be active. I wish my 18-year old college-self had somebody to look up to when it came to being fit.
Fill In The Blank…
I Love…my family, Travis, friends, food, and LIFE!
I Am…thankful and happy with where I’m at in life right now.
I Wish…for world peace. 🙂 But for real, I wish people could be accepting of other people’s differences. There’s a quote painted at Cleveland High School that says “Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common.” I love seeing it and reading it every day!
I Eat…anything and everything. I’m not a picky eater.
