As our Reign Fitness Family and community continues to grow, I knew that it was only a matter of time before we would have to bring on more coaches.

Luckily for us, we had Martha!

Martha has not only been an awesome member of Reign Fitness for the last few years…

She a passion for health & fitness, helping others with their own fitness journey, and was also looking to start a career in the industry. On top of all this, we are all good friends.

So, it was perfect for her to join the Reign Fitness Team!

Mesha and I are seriously so stoked to have such a kind and genuine person join the Reign Fitness Team. We always knew that we wanted the Reign Team and community to feel like family and Martha fits in perfectly!

As she spends the next couple months transitioning into her role as a coach…

I wanted to give her an opportunity to share some things about herself and also give you all a chance to get to know her better!

So, I set up a little Q & A session with her and now we get to share it with all of you.

Also, before I forget…

Martha will have a new training group that she will be coaching starting Early April and we are limiting it to ONLY 6 SPOTS!

If you’re a woman and interested in training with her… EMAIL her directly at Martha@BEREIGNFIT.com or you can email info@bereignfit.com so we can put you on the list to receive more information.

Now for the interview!

Q & A with Martha Van

AP: Hey Martha, can you share a little bit about your personal background?

MV: I am a wife to Ramsey Van, we have been together for 12 years and been married for 7 years.  I am a mommy to Charlize and Lucas.

I work at Providence full time and work part time as a Licensed Esthetician doing Lash Extensions and Make-up Artist for weddings.

Before I discovered my love for fitness, I wanted to be a professional makeup artist doing special make-up effects: prosthetics, blood tubing, airbrush techniques etc…but I live in Seattle, WA so wedding/Glamorous make-up became my focus.

AP: How did you get into fitness/On stage competing?

MV: Growing up I was always active in sports and dance.  With age came responsibilities, and then not having “time” to exercise.

After having my second baby, I wanted to get the weight off fast.

“I tried the latest fad diet and weight loss pill and totally relying on it to lose weight.  I became more tired and fatigue than anything because I wasn’t feeding my body the proper nutrients and exercising.”

I knew I had to change something and was willing to do anything, even working out, lol.

I was invited to do a boot camp class and after my first week I was hooked, I was seeing results within a couple weeks and got help with my nutrition.

I lost my pregnancy weight and started to see some muscle definition in my arms and tightening up in the abs.

“I wanted more results!”

I met Nemesia, and she asked me what my goals were, I told her that I want to do a bikini competition before the year ends.  She helped me prepare for my very first show.

“I wanted to prove to myself and other women that it is possible to have a hot bod after kids.”

I was determined.  I did my first show, taking 3rd place.   It was such an amazing experience.  I continued my training with Albert, competed for two years locally taking home 1st at Ironman & 1st place at Fitstop 24 in 2013 and finally competed one a National Level Stage at Team Universe in New Jersey.  It has been a humbling and amazing experience to compete next to some of the most amazing physiques.

AP: What is your favorite thing about competing?

MV: My favorite thing about competing was the journey and process for each show, improving not only physically but mentally and emotionally.

Competing taught me a lot about myself, about my own strength.  Also the drive that comes with setting goals and surpassing them feels so empowering.

AP: Least Favorite Thing?

MV: My least favorite thing about competing was not having enough time in the day.   I wish there were more hours in a day to be able to balance work, training and most importantly quality time with my family.

Competing takes a lot of time, it was like having a part time job before and after my normal 9-5pm job doing two-a-day work outs was very draining.

AP: What made you want to become a personal trainer?

MV: I want to educate and help those especially women understand, they cannot copy someone else’s program because they want to look like them or because so-and-so is doing it.

Training and nutrition is customized to each individual’s goals.

In order to achieve your goals, you have to do what is right for you not what someone else is doing right for themselves.

AP: What is your favorite thing about fitness?

MV: It is a big stress reliever for me, I always walk out of the gym feeling stress free and energized.

AP: Do you hate any exercises?

MV: I don’t really hate any exercise, but I dislike the rowing machine and stairmaster…hehehehehe

AP: Favorite exercise?

MV: I really love working out my shoulders, anything to get the boulder shoulders! ☺ If I had to choose one it would be the Arnold Press.  I always get a good pump after doing those.

AP: Any advice for someone wanting to get into shape?

MV: Enjoy the process, learn good form, it is your foundation and will help prevent injuries.

“If you fail to plan, plan to fail.”

This quote is so true, not only with fitness, but with everything in life.

AP: Any advice for someone wanting to take their fitness to the next level?

MV: Consistency and nutrition is Key!  Don’t stop!  Remember how far you have come.

AP: What is your favorite cheat meal?

MV: My favorite is Nachos, pizza and cookies! ☺☺☺

AP: Where do you find your motivation?

MV: My motivation starts with me, me as a wife…me as a mom…me as a daughter…me as sister…me as a friend.  Each role I play in life is a motivator to be a better me each day so I can live up to the same standards I have for those I care about.  So stopping is not an option.

I have been down that road of self- doubt and have overcome many obstacles.  I now have come to realize that there is no end to improving one-self.  You have to keep feeding your body with strength to keep your life going strong for yourself and those around you.

AP: What do you like to do for fun?

MV: I like to watch movies and lounge on my couch with my husband and kids

I love to go out and try new foods/restaurants or go to my parent’s house and eat some homemade Filipino food.  During spring and summer, I like to go out as a family and hit up the Farmer’s Market, go to street fairs/festivals and do lots of sight-seeing.

AP: What is your current diet like?

MV: My focus with my nutrition right now is to meet my calories for the day and hit my macros with clean foods but I allow myself to have small things such as Feta Cheese, Ketchup, almond milk etc with my foods.

An example of my diet:

1: 6 Egg whites & 2 pieces Turkey Bacon with a slice of Dave’s Killer Bread

2: 4 oz. Ground Turkey with Green Beans

3: 4 oz. Chicken Breasts with Broccoli &3 oz. mashed sweet potatoes

4: 4 oz. Chicken Breasts & Broccoli; White Cheddar Rice cake

5: Progenex Loco-Mocha recovery shake with an apple

6: 5 oz. Chicken Breast with Costco Kale Salad & 3oz mashed sweet potato

AP: Favorite Healthy Snack?

MV: Strawberries with lite cool whip! Caramel Rice cake with PB2

AP: Who inspires you?

MV: Jamie Eason, because she is an all-natural competitor; she is an inspiration to mothers who want to get/stay healthy and fit, and we have the same body type

AP: Who do you want to help?

MV: I would like to help anyone who is ready for real life results and sick of trying all the short term results stuff because I was once there too.

Getting in shape and taking fitness into your own hands is a real life process and it needs to be treated that way. I’m ready to help individuals who are ready for this real life process.

I would also really be excited to work with new mommies get their pre-baby bodies back or even help them set and achieve new goals. As a mother of two, I get it. This whole fitness journey can be difficult.

But if I was able to do it, I know any mom can too.

I would really love to help moms!
